Annabeth Chase is the deuteragonist of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. She is the intelligent half-blood daughter of Athena and the love interest of Percy Jackson.

Annabeth Chase is a young girl who was raised with the knowledge that her mother was Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and Warfare. She ran away from home at the age of 7 and lived in an abandoned alleyway. Annabeth was found by Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus and Luke Castellan, son of Hermes, who were ran away from their families. After this, the group became an unofficial family together. They were eventually found and directed to Camp Half-blood. However, on their way there, Annabeth and Luke lost Thalia when Hades sent monsters after them.

Due to her time in camp, Annabeth felt more at home and spent the next five years at camp. Every year she stayed at camp, she would receive a bead. At the same time, Annabeth dreamed of going on the quest that would change the world. She would watch all the newcomers who came to camp, hoping they were "the one" who would lead to the quest. However, they always failed.

Season One[]

When Percy first gets to camp, Annabeth and the other children gather around him, as he lays there knocked out. However, Chiron tells her to back up and give him space. She later nurses Percy back to health when he is recovering from his fight with the Minotaur and Annabeth starts watching him from afar. After seeing Clarisse take Percy into the bathroom, Annabeth follows and watches as Percy douses Clarisse anda her siblings with toilet water. Percy and Annabeth meet each other; however, he starts to wonder why Annabeth is watching him. Luke later explains that Annabeth always watches the newcomers, hoping they are the ones who will lead her to her dream of going on a quest. However, she is watching Percy longer than anyone before.

During capture the flag, Annabeth made Percy act as the "distraction" for Clarisse's team. She used her invisibility cap and watched as Percy and Clarisse fought. She takes off her cap and Percy gets mad at her for standing by and doing nothing to help him. She later pushes Percy into the lake, and it confirms her suspicions that he is the son of Poseidon.

Personality[]

Knowing that she would eventually be tasked with going on missions for the good of people like her, she is surprised to find herself paired up with Percy Jackson, a boy she just meets. As the daughter of Athena, Annabeth is extremely intelligent, having suspected that Percy was Poseidon's son after seeing him douse Clarisse in toilet water. Together, along with the satyr Grover Underwood, they must work together to defeat evil.

Annabeth is a stubborn, yet determined young girl who always feels that she has something to prove. While she can come off as callous, she is actually passionate and loyal to those around her and will fight for her friends. Despite being cold and aloof to Percy when they first meet, Luke assures him that Annabeth has a good heart because he has known her longer than him. She is always five steps ahead of her enemies.

Annabeth is depicted as a young African-American girl, with long braided hair. Her attire seems to consist of a grey shirt, blue button up, a purple coat, dark grey pants, and a necklace.

• Genius Level Intellect: Annabeth is a tactical genius and excellent warrior.

  • Telumkinesis: Annabeth has the ability to immediately know how to use a weapon simply by holding it.
  • Dyslexia: Due to being a Demigod, Annabeth has trouble reading in English. Instead, her eyesight is tuned to translating Ancient Greek.
  • ADHD: The ADHD allows Annabeth's quicker and faster reflexes and allows her to be more alert in battle.

Mother

Like all the children of Greek Gods, Annabeth is somewhat distant from her mother, and it only intesified due to Annabeth's relationship with Percy, the son of Poseidon, Athena's rival. However, Athena is loved by her daughter and gave Annabeth a cap that allows her to turn invisible. The action due to Annabeth's impertinent for not stopping Percy for mailing Medusa's head to Mount Olympus, had embarrassed Athena. As such, she did not offer her daughter or her friend sanctuary in her temple when they were being pursued by Echidna, putting a strain on Annabeth's relationship with her mother.

Family[]

Annabeth is the daughter of Frederick Chase. Before her father remarried, Annabeth was her father's world until he remarried and had his open children. She has a strained relationship with her stepmother, who Annabeth felt didn't care for her and her younger half-siblings, causing her to feel unloved by her family. It is currently unknown if she ran away from home as a result of her stepmother, accusing her of putting their family in danger like in the books. Due to this, Annabeth felt more at home at camp and would always come back despite her father asking for a chance.

Percy Jackson[]

Love Interest/Best Friend

Percy Jackson is the new kid at the camp who Annabeth feels a connection to, mostly because he is the one who will lead her on an epic quest she has been dreaming of her whole life. The two first met when she nursed him back to health after his ordeal with the Minotaur. However, they didn't properly meet until after Clarisse tried to give him a swirly that ended with Clarisse getting doused in water, but Percy recognized her as the girl he saw when he first came there and knew she had been watching him ever since he got to camp. During the capture the flag, she partnered up with Percy but abandoned him to Clarisse. Annabeth pushed him into the water nearby to confirm that he was the son of Poseidon. Another reason the two don't get along is due to their parents' longstanding rivalry with each other when Athena was chosen to be the patron goddess of Athens over Poseidon.

She volunteerily goes with Grover and Percy, and during their travels, Percy and Annabeth's friendship grows into something more.

Chiron[]

Father Figure/Great-Uncle

Chiron is Annabeth's father figure, mentor and great-grandmother uncle. He told Annabeth that she would go on a quest that would be an adventure of a lifetime but every new camper didn't put Annabeth's hopes up.

Luke Castellan[]

Close Friend/Brother Figure

Annabeth was rather close to Luke when they were both young; however, by the tim eof the series, Annabeth and Luke seemed to have drifted apart. However, in "I Become the Supreme Lord of the Bathroom," Luke tells Percy that Annabeth is practically his sister.

In the season 1 finale, Annabeth was heartbroken to learn that Luke was the true lightning Thief and had betrayed everyone by becoming a spy of Kronos.

They will unfortunately be reunited on the quest to find the Golden fleece, and be fated to suffer.

Thalia Grace[]

Best Friend

Annabeth and Thalia first met when the latter had come across her in an ally way. They learned that she was an orphan just like them and invited her to tag along. While Luke accepted Annabeth right away, Thalia stayed distant from her until Annabeth earned it. Since then, the girls became as close as sisters. However, on their way to camp, Thalia was killed by monsters Hades sent after the group. Before she died, Zeus turned Thalia into a tree, leaving Annabeth deeply saddened by her death. It is revealed that when the trio reaches the fields of Asphodel in the underworld that Annabeth has the most regrets, thinking she abandoned her family and blaming herself for Thalia's death

Before Annabeth left Camp Half-Blood after reconnecting with her father, she lamented behind as she said goodbye to Thalia's tree.

Grover Underwood[]

Grover Underwood is one of Annabeth's best friends. When Annabeth was seven years old, Grover was the one who presumably found her, Thalia, and Luke, taking them all to camp. However, they all lost hope after Thalia was killed by Hades' monster as Zeus transformed Thalia into a pine tree. Since then, it appears Annabeth and Grover have stayed close and Grover became her protector sometime after Thalia's death.

Medusa[]

Medusa is angered by Athena but she shows no ill will towards Annabeth, as she was initially kind to her. However, after Percy rejects her offer to turn Annabeth and Grover to stone, Medusa grew enraged. She almost turned her into stone but she and Percy defeated her.

• In all prior adaptations, Annabeth is depicted as being white with blonde hair, just like in the books. This is the first time she is portrayed as being African-American.
  • Prior to Leah Sava Jeffries portraying her, Annabeth was played by Alexandra Daddario in the two live-action film adaptations and Kristen Stokes in the Broadway musical.
• In the book, she owns her dad's college ring, which is seen on her necklace in promotional material and when she goes on the quest after episode 3.
• Since Leah's casting in Percy Jackson as Annabeth Chase, There has been a rise in this depiction of Annabeth. As such, recent fanart has commonly started portraying Annabeth as an African American woman.
• Annabeth's casting met with high controversy just like Halle Bailey's when she was cast as Ariel.
  • Both were originally Caucasian in the source material.
  • Both Halle Bailey and Leah Jefferies suffer from controversy and criticism.
  • However both of the girls' original actresses were supportive of their casting.
  • Ironically both The Little Mermaid and Percy Jackson were released in 2023.
