Define casual, if you mean just logging in maybe once a week or so you're probably better off with something like LoL or WoT but, if you mean 2-3 hours a night then you can work with that. Poopsocking in this game tends to burn you out anyway in my experience.

In terms of "how everything works" that's not really a question that you can ever really expect to know because there is a LOT to do in Eve I think I've posted this image here before but, this does a pretty good job of showing how much there is you can do

The "point of the game" varies pretty widely on who you ask but for me Eve is about a game where the playerbase controls the world. (versus dev made content). The Devs merely give the tools for the players to create the universe they see fit.

Casual as in like 3-4 times a week for like maybe an hour or two a session.

but are there still a lot of people playing?

Yes. Typical peak is about 50k during late euro/early us prime with 20k before downtime.

The game is about PvP, plain and simple

I took a stroll, and spied a maid, but Matron's duty stayed my blade.
So busy now, I miss the thrill, if only I had time to kill.

pvp? soo umm what abut the "carebear" server?

My first time and day in Jeuno and the first 6 hours of it is spent staring at a chocobo's butt.

All 300,000 subscribers (And growing) reside on the single sharded server. Not only is EVE still growing in numbers 9 years after launch, it's also the biggest MMO you will have ever played.

WoW might have had 12,000,000 subscribers, but they were all segregated. Not here. It's all one world.

Wow's actually bleeding subscribers now (last number I saw was over a million subs lost) someone sent me a scroll of resurrection (free 7 day sub) so that I could see what its like now. Even from when I quit a year ago its a lot worse and I can easily see why people are leaving

    1. The last raid tier of the current expansion is very weak so everyone got their T13 heroic sets and quit
    2. The sheer number of trolls and dumb asses has reached critical mass even on my server which is as a whole causing them all to implode
    3. The RP community has lost a substantial number of core players, I was on an RP-PVP server known for its active RP community and due to number 2 they all more or less got trolled off
    4. The PVP has always been terrible but now, they've nerfed it even further so that where you used to be able to gank newbies on the world level this mechanic has all but disappeared leaving only the rated battlegrounds which are more or less rock paper scissor fights determined by gear/classes.

So while I doubt your average WoW player is going to start playing Eve it's probably not going to hurt Eve's sub numbers.
