Who owns most of the funeral homes? ›

Three large corporations now own 15% of the 23,000 homes in the funeral home industry. Service Corporation International (SCI), based in Houston, is the largest of the three, followed by Loewen Group Inc., based in Vancouver, Canada and Philadelphia, and Stewart Enterprises Inc., based in New Orleans.

Swarens', share of the partnership, when Charlie passed away in 1934 due to failing health, Merrill and Lois purchased Ed Adam's share of the partnership in 1953. The firm was known as Swarens Funeral Home. In 1973 the firm was incorporated and ownership was transferred to Merrill, Lois, Norman and Jerry Swarens.
